A long time ago three brothers lived in the area where Poland is today: friendly Lech, clever Czech and quiet Rus. They loved each other very much but they decided to settle down elsewhere. They set off to find a place to live. They rode on their beautiful horses through the forest and suddenly, they got lost in the wilderness. They noticed a big eagle. Czech wanted to kill it but Lech didn’t let him. Lech liked the bird, its nest and the area, so he decided to stay there. The eagle became the symbol of the nation he founded and the place where he saw the eagle was later called Gniezno. Czech went further to the south and there the Czech Republic still exists today. Rus went to the east where he founded Russia.
