The legend of Kmita A03
Kinga Tenerowicz, kl IIIA, gimnazjum w Zabierzowie

A long time ago when Sigmund the Old was in power, a poor but brave knight lived in Poland. He was called Kmita. One day he left his home town to look for new adventures and luck. He fought in many battles, defended his honour, rescued people and helped damsels in distress. When he planned to return home, he heard that the Polish king was organising a tournament for all knights. Kmita decided to take part in the tournament, so he turned his horse and rushed to the west to Cracow, the capital city of a big and happy land in the heart of Europe. Kmita appeared there but his arrival did not make him any friends. The next day, the knight from Silesia stood to fight and threw down his gauntlet. But no one would fight the poor man. When the royal marshal, Wolski, who was a sensible man, saw this he released wild animals to save the knight’s honour. Everybody was worried about Kmita but he and his horse weren’t scared of anything. Finally Kmita won, but his horse was eaten. The injured man was carried to the royal chamber. He noticed a beautiful woman there. He fell in love for the first time in his life. She was the daughter of the rich banker. Unfortunately, her father was looking for a better husband for his only child. The poor knight from an unknown family didn’t have a chance. The young maiden fell in love with Kmita too, but her father decided to separate them. They had to say, "good bye” to each other. On his departure, Kmita gave his lover a dove and confessed:

"I have wandered through many countries, fighting and starving. I sent my mother one dove a month with a message. I wanted to let out the last one from Cracow, but I won’t do this. Today I have decided to give you this last dove. I understand that your father will never give us his blessing, so I’m going back to Silesia and will wait for your letter. But if you find happiness and love with somebody else, kill the bird”. The young maiden took the dove, kissed Kmita and went back to her palace. Day after day, the rich banker organized balls, but his daughter’s heart couldn’t forget the young knight. The lady was constantly upset, nothing could make her smile. She missed Kmita more and more. One day she made a decision and wrote a letter to him. The letter was full of strong and tender feelings. On a sunny day the dove flew to Kmita. It turned out that at the same time the people from Wawel castle went hunting. The dove was killed and the letter fell into the banker's hands. He was furious. Kmita was sitting in the tavern near Cracow not knowing about the letter. He was drinking mead and listening to people talking. Suddenly somebody said:

Yes, today in the palace there is a big ball. The banker organized it for his daughter, who fell in love with one knight. She is sad and can’t stop crying. Kmita didn’t know why he didn't receive a message, but he decided not to wait any longer. When the moon appeared in the sky, he climbed to her bedroom and they escaped on his horse. In the morning, when the servants found their tracks, everyone started looking for them. The couple wasn’t lucky as Kmita’s horse drowned in a swamp. Kmita was mad with sorrow and he climbed with the young maiden on the high rock. They jumped into the river and died together in the waves. It was the end of their love. Today this rock is called Kmita’s rock.
