A long time ago, in the XII century, on the bank of a river, near the
beautiful rocks there was a small settlement. The people from the settlement
built the church there and under the church the tunnel leading to the rocks. The
church with its secret way out was a safe shelter in the times of the Tatars’
attacks.
One day the Duke Boleslaw the Shy (Wstydliwy), together with his men and the
carriage full of gold, was passing by the settlement. Suddenly, he was attacked
by the Tatars there. He escaped to the nearby church, and through the tunnel to
the rocks. However, the Tatars had already known about the secret passage and
they were waiting for him at the entrance to the rocks. Then, the miracle
happened. At the moment when Boleslaw and his men came outside the tunnel, the
two rocks closed. The frightened Tatars ran away in panic. Since that time the
rocks have been named “Bolechowicka Gate” and the village“ Bolechowice” from the
name of the Duke – Boleslaw to commemorate the miracle of that place.
