Tim Burton’s "Corpse Bride" is a mixture of different genres: animation, comedy,
romance, musical and fantasy. The main actors lending their voices to the film
characters are: Johnny Depp (as Victor Van Dort), Helena Bonham-Carter (as the
Corpse Bride), and Emily Watson (as Victoria Everglot).
Everything takes place in the XIX century in a small Victorian country. A young
man Victor has to marry Victoria, a daughter of the aristocratic family the
Everglots. But there is a problem. Victor is worried about the engagement and
wedding. When the wedding preparations go wrong, he goes into the forest to
practise his wedding vows. He puts a ring on a piece of wood imagining that it
is a woman’s hand. Then Victor is taken into the land of the dead to marry a
corpse. Of course he misses his fiancée Victoria and wants to come back home.
I like this film because it has some characteristic features of all Burton’s
movies: there is a villain, dead cats and dogs, skeletons, weird characters with
unnaturally long legs, short feet and shadows around their big eyes. The
director uses the computer graphics of Edward Gorey. The music in the film,
composed by Danny Elfman, is really good. The characters sing in some parts of
the film, which gives it a special atmosphere.
I think that you won’t waste your time watching this gripping film!
