Halloween Day is on the 31 of October

(it is the day before All Saints Day celebrated in Poland). It is a very popular holiday in America, Ireland and Scotland. The full name of Halloween is All Hallows Eve or Hallows Saints Eve. The most popular game on Halloween is “Bobbing for apples”. In this game, children have to get apples out of a big bucket of water without using their hands (or feet). This means you have to put your head in the water and grab an apple with your teeth! A lot of children like this day because they get a lot of sweets. They call at their neighbors’ homes and ask for a treat. Halloween costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as ghosts, skeletons, witches and devils. On Halloween, people usually prepare a lot of special dishes. The most popular is “Toffee Apples”.

Recipe for toffee apples:

Ingredients:

  • 4 or 5 washed apples
  • 220g sugar
  • 4 or 5 wooden skewers/forks

How to do it:

Make the carmel by sifting the sugar through a sieve and melting it in a shallow pan over moderate heat. Stir all the time to prevent the sugar from sticking or burning. When the liquid is coffee coloured it is ready for the apples to be dipped in one by one. Each should be pierced with a fork or skewer. Turn the apples round carefully until the whole surface is covered with toffee. Then lay the apples on wax paper to harden.

Delicious !!!
